Fall 2007 Projects, part one

Winston Churchill Portrait by Yousef Karsch, 1941

The story goes like this: Karsh set up his equipment and was ready to take the portrait, but there was just one thing wrong. Churchill was puffing on a fresh cigar. Karsh picked up an ash tray, held it in front of Churchill, and asked, "Will you please remove it, sir?" The request was ignored. Karsh went back behind the camera to check the focus one last time. He then walked back to Churchill, said, "Forgive me, sir," and pulled the cigar from the great man's mouth. "By the time I had walked the four to six feet back to my camera," Karsh writes, "he was looking as belligerently at me as if he could have devoured me. And I took the picture."

Presumed Innocence at the DeCordova

Presumed Innocence: Photographic Perspectives of Children
DeCordova Museum, Lincoln, MA

The 113 photographs and single video in Presumed Innocence were made by photographers who characteristically focus on children, and also by those who occasionally photograph children. The international collection is rich in traditional documentary and socially concerned photography, and also includes images created with newer digital technologies that enable the photographer to create partially or wholly fictitious images. The selected images fall loosely into the following thematic and often overlapping categories: the child alone, family relationships, children and animals, the child observed, the child at play, the child at risk, rites of passage, and constructed narratives.
